Old Town Root Beer Company Root Beer Bottle The first root beer that I encountered from Old Town Root Beer Company is ironically the last I end up writing about. I know, I know, I wish everything were chronological too but that’s what happens when you’ve been reviewing root beers for longer than blogs have existed. Give me another year or so and all the old ones should be worked through. Anyways, the fact that we have three different root beers from the same company makes them one of the coolest companies in the world. Then they go and ruin it for themselves by putting their url on the label of this root beer and then not even bothering to pay the $10/year fee to keep said website so it doesn’t work when you visit it. I mean, seriously, it’s not that expensive. Their label is also really busy with small text and not near enough emphasis on their logo. They just have so much to tell us and not hardly enough room. Some of that text is to claim to be a “premium micro-brewed root beer” made with only the “Finest” ingredients, which evidently includes sodium benzoate and “other Flavors.”

The Body on this is medium and slightly creamy. It has a very simple taste to it. There isn’t much Bite to it, though, it does tingle the tongue a bit. The Head is very disappointing. It is on the low side and fizzes away in seconds leaving the root beer nearly flat. The Aftertaste is creamy vanilla with accents of honey and is honestly the best part of this brew.

There isn’t really anything bad tasting, but it needs a lot more good. It’s interesting that their generic named root beer is, in fact, the most generic and average tasting of the lot. So if you’ve got the choice between this or the other Old Town Root Beer Company offerings, take them instead. See how it rates against other root beers.

La Conner Brewing Company Root Beer Way back in mid April my wife said that she wanted to go to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. It’s over an hour drive north so I said that I’d look into it. I immediately started looking to see if there was any breweries with root beer. Ironically, the Skagit River Brewery was right there, but I’d just reviewed it a mere two weeks before. None of the others seemed to have any but I sent out emails. La Conner Brewing Company responded that they made their own and served it tapped out of the brew vats. Well that settled it, we were going to Tulip Festival! We took the morning and went to Tulip Town and I was completely amazed at the acres and acres of blooming tulips. The day was beautiful and we spent several hours walking in the field and took a tractor ride. Then we drove another 10 minutes, past more tulip fields, to La Conner for lunch. The first thing I did was order a root beer, no ice, lots of Head.

The Body is very mild and fruity with a little spice. It isn’t watery, it just doesn’t really have much flavor if that makes sense. The Bite has just a little spice and some sour carbonation coming up but not much. The Head doesn’t exist, at all, and there is even low carbonation as well. The Aftertaste is sugary and sour that vanishes quickly.

Ew, seriously? That’s their root beer, it’s just bad, weak, fruity, and sour. Why did they put sourness in it? And why no Head? The waitress said that it’s more of an old fashioned sarsaparilla type root beer with low carbonation, but last time I had a sarsaparilla, it tasted good. Even their root beer float, which I hesitantly ordered for the children at their insistence, was bad. Fancy vanilla bean ice cream could do nothing to improve that flavor. What kind of root beer can’t be improved with vanilla ice cream? Horrible root beer, that’s what. The food was pretty good, especially the fish tacos, but it was overpriced. I can’t really recommend this place to anyone, though do check out the tulips if you’ve got a chance.

Fish tacos and wood fired pizza for lunch. Pretty good but over priced.

Sparky's Fresh Draft Root Beer BottleSeal of Approval Made by Knox Brewing in Pacific Grove California, Sparky’s is leading the root beer revival, according to them at least. This started out as a home brew by the award winning brewer Kevin Knox who after years of perfecting the recipe released it to the world. Why they call it Sparky’s is beyond me. All I hope is that it isn’t named after a dog. I can’t remember how I heard about it, it was some time in early 2005 I think. I sent them an email asking how to order it and they sent me four bottles to try plus a T-shirt. Yay! I love root beer clothing. Two of their bottles were 22 ounces which is pretty unique in the root beer world. The label is nice. Simple to the point. A hand grabbing a glass of root beer.

The Body is really sweet and spicy with all of the right stuff. You can really taste the honey. The Bite is spicy and solid as well, almost too much for me, but not quite. It was rather sharp. The Head is decent, frothy, but a little too much on the slim side. The Aftertaste a luscious combination of honey and spices that left me tipping back the empty glass trying to get some more.

Yum, yum! This is a good one. I love that spicy Bite. Now I know why they also put it in 22 ounce bottles, the brewers foresaw that you’d want more. Drinking this is a pleasure from the first draught to the last drop. Okay, Sparky’s, you are right, you are leading The Great Root Beer Revival. See how it rates against other root beers.
