Brigham's Brew Root Beer BottleSeal of ApprovalThe final brew from my journey to UT and the only one in a bottle. I snagged four bottles of it on my way to the Salt Lake airport making 4 new root beers in a three day trip. I must say this was the most successful trip yet as far as root beer is concerned. Brigham’s Brew is brewed by Wasatch Brewery and to my knowledge is the only root beer to be named after religious leader (unless there’s some Innocent XII brew I’ve heretofore missed), taking the celebrity root beer names to a whole new level. I find it ironic that a root beer named after the second Mormon Prophet, Brigham Young, would be made by non-Mormons (this is, of course, assuming that owning a brewery precludes one from also being in full fellowship with the church) but then again he was also the first Governor of Deseret (Utah before it was a state) so they’re probably just tipping their hats to Utah’s founder. Plus, if their brewery had been around then, the root beer would have been the only one that Brigham Young would have drank. That’s actually a really good marketing strategy. Maybe we’ll see founders’ brews from other major religions that forbid alcohol in their holy cities someday.

The Body is rich and creamy. A delicious honey flavor greats your tongue and then introduces it to luscious vanilla. A little wintergreen surfaces later to accent the rest of the standard root beer flavors making the perfect soiree in your mouth. There’s a solid bite from spice and carbonation, but the maltodextrin ensures that it is a very smooth affair. The Head is excellent. It almost fizzed over the top of my mug with each pouring. It dissipates faster than some of the other greats though, and is probably the only drawback. The Aftertaste is creamy vanilla and wintergreen with honey accents showing up just as the other two flavors exit.

Wow! I was expecting good but not such a superb brew! I wish I had purchased more bottles. This is hands down one of the best root beers I’ve ever had. So nice to have my trip end with the best. Truly, this is the highest compliment a brewer could pay to Brother Brigham. See how it rates against other root beers.

  1. You’ll have to find a place that offers Brigham’s Brew on tap. If you thought the stuff from a bottle was good, try it on tap: To me, it’s even better than the bottled stuff.

    • The store I bought the bottles from also served it on tap. I will definitely get a pint next time I’m down there.

  2. I have to say your ratings are spot on!!! As a Mormon who doesn’t drink alcohol, I take my root beer very seriously. A few months ago I decided to try to find my favorite root beer. Henry Weinhards had always been a favorite of mine but I hadn’t tried too many different brands. I went to 4 different stores and came home with about 12 different root beers, most of which I had never tried. Funny thing was the first one i tried was Brighams brew. Immediately I said “this is the best root beer I’ve ever had.” And so far nothing else has been able to remove it from my number one spot. I’ll have to try the Hanks that you recommend. I knew your reviews were legit when I saw how you rated Virgil’s. it apparently had won some prestigious international award. I thought it tasted like it had expired. It was not even in the same league. Also your review of Brandabergs was exactly right. That stuff is simply disgusting. Like you my tongue kept trying to wipe away the taste. Root beers like that are probably why the Europeans say root beer tastes like cough medicine. Anyway I love your website. I had thought of publishing my reviews after trying all the root beers, but you have done an excellent job so I see no need to do so. Keep it up!

  3. I have an upscale assisted living facility that is interested in procuring keg root beer on tap for their residents. I would appreciate contact back if this product could be sold and delivered to this facility being built in Orem. Please send a message back if you have further info. Ross

  4. Can you tell me which store you found the Brigham’s Brew? I would really appreciate it!

  5. You wouldn’t happen to know where I could get some outside of Utah, would you?

  6. I’m a Utah resident and root beer lover. My friends gave me a bottle of this for my birthday. Never tried it before. This was my reaction.
“Hey, this Brigham’s goes down smooth, and afterwards you don’t even smell!”
    I’m a Seinfeld lover too.

  7. Unfortunately, as of late Brigham’s Brew is now found only in a can. To make more profit and save money, the whole brewery has switched to cans for all their products. They say it’s for the environment. However, the metallic taste that goes along with being canned is also there. This used to be my favorite root beer but no longer. I’ll drink Hank’s or Jackson Hole Sarsaparilla from here on out.

  8. I’ll be honest, it Comes across more bland than anything. I only discovered it after it was canned, and I believe it could have been great in a bottle. But this is just bland., the spices, battle the cream and foam, muting everything. It does go down smooth, but smooth like water, not a well-craftes soda. If they put more effort into the soda than the can design, it would probably taste better. As it is, it Comes across as all show and no go.
